To join a public server, either double-click on a server from the public server list to create a new room, or use the /join command to join an existing room.Either join a public server or host a private server. If each player does not have the exact same save file, the emulation will most likely desync.

The save file is located in the “Save” folder in Project64 by default. If you have a save file for that game, send it to each player.
